Bruins Can’t Stop Tennessee

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Chamique Holdsclaw had 29 points and 12 rebounds to lead No. 2 Tennessee to a 100-77 victory over No. 8 UCLA on Monday night.
The Lady Vols (9-1), who shot 62% from the field in the first half and led by 25 points after 20 minutes, also got 16 points from Tamika Catchings and 15 points from Semeka Randall. UCLA (7-3) was led by Janae Hubbard with 17 points. Maylana Martin added 16 and eight rebounds.
The Lady Vols fell behind 4-0 to open the game, but dominated with defense and a strong transition game the rest of the way.
Holdsclaw and Randall keyed a 20-6 run that left UCLA trailing 24-10 midway through the first half. The Bruins committed seven turnovers in the stretch and had 17 turnovers at halftime.
A 22-10 spurt by Tennessee to close out the half gave the Lady Vols a 55-30 lead. Holdsclaw had four baskets in a row to fuel the run, and Kellie Jolly had a three-pointer in the closing seconds.
UCLA’s offensive problems continued in the second half. The Bruins scored only five points in the first six minutes and fell behind by 30 points.
A 15-4 run by UCLA, sparked by Martin’s nine points, brought the Bruins to within 20 at 83-63. But they would get no closer.
Michelle Snow added 14 points and 10 rebounds for Tennessee.
