University Posts Water Polo Victory

Samantha Klau scored with 1 minute 4 seconds remaining in overtime to help host University, ranked seventh in the county, defeat third-ranked Newport Harbor, 5-4, in a nonleague girls’ water polo game Thursday.
Goalie Amy Hilts had 14 saves for University, which led, 3-2, after three quarters before Newport Harbor’s Kyndra Cox scored the only fourth-quarter goal to send the game into overtime.
After Maureen Clancy scored to give University (5-3) a 4-3 lead in overtime, Cox scored her third goal to tie it, 4-4, for Newport Harbor (5-2).
In other nonleague games:
No. 2 Villa Park 12, Corona del Mar 4--Kristyn Pulver had four goals and Shari Meyer added three for visiting Villa Park (7-0).
No. 10 Foothill 11, Mission Viejo 7--Jacquelin Pirro had six goals, four steals and three assists for host Foothill (2-1). Teresa Gorbut added three goals for the Knights.
Amanda McKnight scored six goals for Mission Viejo (1-4).
El Dorado 7, Los Alamitos 1--Allison Kurvers scored three goals for host El Dorado.
Fountain Valley 9, Laguna Hills 2--Kelly Newton scored four goals for visiting Fountain Valley (4-5).
Katella 13, Magnolia 5--Katella’s Devon Wright scored five goals and also made three saves playing goalie in the second half.
Long Beach Jordan 16, Kennedy 14--Senior Karen Steen scored eight goals for Kennedy (1-4) to tie the school-record she set against Orange Dec. 10. Steen has 22 goals in three games this week.
Michelle Castellanos scored nine goals for Jordan.
Sonora 26, Whittier Pioneer 3--Laura McNabb scored her first goal 20 seconds into the game and finished with 10 for Sonora.
In nonleague boys’ soccer:
Calvary Chapel 3, Garden Grove 1--Brian Cripe scored two goals for and Julian De Leon also scored for Calvary Chapel (2-6-1).
Century 2, Santa Ana Valley 2--Jamie Nejera scored the tying goal in the 75th minute for host Santa Ana Valley (0-4-2). Erik Valencia and Sergio Bustos scored first-half goals for Century (5-1-3).
In the Brea Tournament:
Brea Olinda 5, Villa Park 0--Josh Alexander scored two goals and Chris Manton, Daniel Flores and Chris Ferraris had one each for Brea Olinda (6-0) in the quarterfinals.
Mater Dei 2, Chino 1--Geoff McKnight scored on a header from Leny Delorenzo for the game-winner for Mater Dei in a consolation game.
In nonleague girls’ soccer:
Capistrano Valley 5, Irvine 0--Lindsey Greco scored three goals to lead Capistrano Valley (4-0-1).
Corona del Mar 8, Katella 0--Meghan Bryan scored four goals for the second consecutive game to lead visiting Corona del Mar (7-0). Bryan has 13 goals this season for the Sea Kings. Allison Brawner added two goals for Corona del Mar, which took 25 shots and held Katella (2-3-1) to one shot.
Costa Mesa 1, Garden Grove 0--Katie Roche scored in the 25th minute for the host Mustangs (5-3).
Edison 2, Dana Hills 0--Kristina Furniss scored two goals, her second one on a free kick in the second half for Edison (5-2-1). Dana Hills is 3-5.
Huntington Beach 1, Long Beach Poly 0--Jordan Smith scored a first-half goal off an assist from Jennifer Konowel for visiting Huntington Beach (2-2-2).
Laguna Beach 1, Trabuco Hills 1--Sarah Higuera scored the tying goal with seven minutes remaining for Trabuco Hills (1-1-2). Rosie Dobbs scored for visiting Laguna Beach (5-1-1).
Laguna Hills 2, Rosary 1--Megan Griffith scored a goal and had the assist on Kim Lanier’s goal for host Laguna Hills (9-2).
Loara 8, Magnolia 0--Ana Medina scored three goals and Lauren Lappin had two, giving her 11 this season, for Loara (6-0).
Los Alamitos 4, Cypress 0--Junior midfielder Kaeli Kentner scored three goals for visiting Los Alamitos (6-1-1).
Mater Dei 7, Long Beach Wilson 0--Alison Fennell scored four goals and Cara Zamora scored two for Mater Dei (2-0-1).
San Clemente 4, Carlsbad 1--Tracy Walla scored two second-half goals and Whitney Jones and Lindsay Lugo also scored for San Clemente (7-0-2).
Valencia 3, Troy 0--Alejandra Nunez, Katie Eatherton and Missy Loera scored for visiting Valencia (8-2).
Woodbridge 0, University 0--Nicole William had four saves and Kate Cumsky had three for University (3-2-4). Jenelle Godges had one save and Sandra Martinez had three for Woodbridge (5-1-1).
