Mania Houspian scored 25 points and Glendale High made an adjustment on defense in the final quarter to beat Notre Dame, 69-63, on Thursday night in pool play of the Burroughs girls’ basketball tournament.
Unable to keep up with guards Sierra Hauser-Price and Jamie Fortin of Notre Dame, Coach Jerry Mike of Glendale called off his full-court press.
“We thought we could go after their guards,” Mike said. “But halfway [through] the fourth quarter we switched to a half-court man defense.
“We probably should have done that sooner because they were blowing right by us.”
Hilary Driffill, a 5-foot-11 junior, sparked Glendale (8-1). She had 13 rebounds and scored 19 points, 11 in the third quarter.
Glendale, ranked No. 10 in the region by The Times, disrupted Notre Dame’s offense by eliminating breakaway opportunities.
Forced to rely on their perimeter shooting, the Knights (9-3) were outscored, 11-4, in the last three minutes.
K.K. Barwick scored 13 points and Nikki Inakomna added 12 for Notre Dame, which led by eight points in the third quarter.
