The average remained at its lowest level since early October, when it reached a 31-year low of 6.49%. Fifteen-year mortgages, a popular refinancing option, averaged 6.35% this week, up from 6.34% the week before. On one-year adjustable-rate mortgages, lenders were asking an average initial rate of 5.55%, up from 5.53%. The rates do not include add-on fees known as points, which averaged at or just under 1% of the loan amount for all three types of mortgages.
