What’s happening the next few weeks:

* The San Francisco Opera closes its 1998-99 season with Giacomo Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly,” under the direction of Ron Daniels. Sylvie Valayre stars as Butterfly with Luis Lima as Pinkerton in the production, designed by Michael Yeargan. * A survey of the works of Pablo Picasso between 1937 and 1945 remains on view at the Legion of Honor through Jan. 3 before moving to the Guggenheim Museum in New York in February. The exhibition, “Picasso and the War: 1937-1945,” explores the reactions in the artist’s work to the horrors of the Spanish Civil War and living in Paris during the Nazi occupation. The Legion of Honor is in Lincoln Park near 34th Avenue and Clement Street, open Tuesday through Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. $7; $5, seniors; $4, ages 12-17; children under 12 admitted free. * The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art has on display a career retrospective of Richard Diebenkorn, one of the most important West Coast artists of the 20th century.
