Bill to Revive Film Industry Approved

In an attempt to reverse a Hollywood invasion and revive a once-thriving local industry, Mexican legislators have approved a law that would force theaters to reserve 10% of screen time for Mexican movies. Last-minute talks with theater owners and movie distributors whittled down an original version of the bill that set the figure at 30% and would have levied a 5% tax on tickets to create a fund promoting Mexican movies. The bill, approved by the lower house of Congress in a 478-0 vote Sunday, will go to the Senate this week, where it is expected to win unanimous support.
