Vivian G. Thomas; Retired Ventura Teacher

Ventura resident Vivian G. Thomas died Sunday at a local care facility following a lengthy illness. She was 89.

Thomas was born March 5, 1909, in Aztec, N. M. She moved to Ventura from Fresno 50 years ago. Thomas earned a bachelor’s degree at Fresno State and a master’s degree at USC.

She taught at E. P. Foster, Lincoln and Pierpont elementary schools in Ventura prior to retiring in 1974. She was also a teacher for the U. S. Air Force in Germany, Japan and Taiwan.

She was active in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Ventura, Ventura County Friends of the Library and various museums. She enjoyed traveling and visited more than 100 countries. Her last major trip was to China in 1994.

She is survived by her son, Lawton Thomas of New York City; a sister, Geneive Wein of Fresno, and a brother, Richard Gilbert of San Bernardino.

At her request, there will be no services.

Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society in Ventura.

Arrangements are under the direction of Ted Mayr Funeral Home in Ventura.
