Mike Modano scored to spark a three-goal second period as the Dallas Stars defeated the Calgary Flames, 3-2, Monday night at Calgary. Brian Skrudland and Sergei Zubov also scored for the Stars (15-5-3).
Roman Turek, getting a rare start, made 23 saves for Dallas and remained unbeaten (3-0-2) in five starts.
In the second period, Modano was hooked off the puck from behind by a high stick from Valeri Bure that caught Modano in the face. Modano was helped off the ice holding a towel against his face and referee Mark Faucette assessed a double high-sticking minor against Bure and awarded Modano a penalty shot. He returned to the ice and missed the shot, as goalie Tyler Moss made a pad save.
New York Rangers 6, Toronto 2--Goalie Mike Richter and the Rangers continued their turnaround after a slow start, beating the Maple Leafs at New York in a battle of two hot teams.
Richter made 24 saves as he extended his personal unbeaten streak and the Rangers’ team streak to six (5-0-1).
