El Camino Real’s Maio Steps Down as Coach
- Share via
Mike Maio, who guided El Camino Real High’s baseball team to four City Section championships in the 1990s, announced his retirement Friday.
Maio took over as varsity coach at El Camino Real in 1983 and built the program into one of the Valley’s best. The Conquistadores won City titles in 1993, 1994, 1997 and 1998.
He started teaching in the early 1960s in Los Angeles and was one of the last coaches who did not wear a uniform during games. His teams were always fundamentally sound, relying on pitching and hustle.
Bob Ganslee, the Conquistadors’ junior varsity coach, will replace Maio.
