COLLEGE ROUNDUP : UC Santa Barbara Beats Irvine Women

UC Irvine had two chances to tie the score late but failed and host UC Santa Barbara went on to a 62-56 victory Sunday in a Big West Conference women’s basketball game.
UC Irvine, which is in first place, was outscored in the second half, 39-31. The Anteaters (10-6, 7-2) were within two points with about two minutes left but turned the ball over on one possession then failed to shoot before the shot clock ran out on the next.

Amy Smith had 24 points for UC Santa Barbara (9-5, 6-2). Tamera Thomas scored 15 and Jinelle Williams added 13 for UC Irvine. Allah-mi Basheer, Irvine’s leading scorer at 15.5 point average, was held to four points.

In a Big West Conference men’s tennis match:
UC Irvine 4, Nevada Las Vegas 3--Host UC Irvine, ranked 37th nationally, won two doubles matches to secure the victory against No. 32 Las Vegas. Chris Tontz and Fred Bach won at No. 1 doubles, 8-5, for the Anteaters (3-2, 1-0).
