LOUIS ARMSTRONG: A Cultural Legacy edited by Marc H. Miller (University of Washington Press: $29.95; 248 pp., paperback original). Issued in conjunction with a traveling exhibit organized by the Queens Museum of Art, the five essays in this volume document the life and career of the great jazz musician. Armstrong kept copious scrapbooks, notes and journals, enabling the editors to assemble hundreds of drawings and photographs that range from formal portraits to artwork inspired by jazz. As the exhibit will only appear in museums East of the Mississippi, jazz fans in the Western U.S. will have to content themselves with this book.
