GIRLS’ SOCCER / GOLDEN WEST LEAGUE ROUNDUP : Engesser Gives Ocean View Upper Hand With 5 Goals

Not many girls’ soccer teams have been able to stop Ocean View’s Kimberly Engesser this season. Add Rosary to that list.

Engesser scored a school-record five goals as eighth-ranked Ocean View defeated Rosary, 6-1, in a Golden West League game Thursday at Ocean View.

The victory gave Ocean View (14-1-2, 5-0) the upper hand in the league race, but the teams meet again Monday at Rosary.

“I think I was ready for this game,” Engesser said, “because I thought it was one of our toughest games in league.”

Engesser, who has 29 goals this season and 91 in her career, scored on a direct kick 10 minutes into the game to give Ocean View a 1-0 lead.

Six minutes later, Rosary’s Laura Fulton tied the score on a pass from Carrie Hurst.

“I think that woke us up a little bit,” Engesser said. She then scored on a nice crossing pass from Beth Henshaw, giving the Seahawks the lead for good.

Engesser scored her third goal of the half by dribbling through the Rosary defense and sending a one-hop shot past goalkeeper Robyn Leonhardt.

She added second-half goals on a corner kick and a rebound. Jenae Veal scored Ocean View’s other goal.

Rosary Coach Heather McNatt said the Royals (7-2-1, 2-1) will not be discouraged when the teams meet again.

“We’re not going to forget what happened today, but we’re not going to let that stop us,” McNatt said. “(Engesser’s) a great player, but we didn’t get the job done today on her. You shut her down, you shut down the majority of their offense.”

In another Golden West League game:

Westminster 3, Santa Ana 1--Amber Lynch scored two goals for Westminster (7-2, 3-1). Diana Gomez scored a goal and added five saves playing goalie in the first half.
