SANTA ANA : Schools Get Grant for Anti-Tobacco Efforts

The Santa Ana Unified School District has received a $150,000 state grant for a program to deter youngsters from using tobacco, a district spokesman said.
The Department of Education grant will fund prevention efforts for about 10,600 high school students, awareness programs at other grade levels, special prevention programs for at-risk students, intervention programs for current users, and parent education efforts, said Edward Lee Vargas, assistant superintendent of support services.
The grant will also pay for production of animated public service announcements created by high school students under the direction of professional animators. The videos will be submitted to a public-access network, presented during Parents Night programs and televised in local high school classes, Vargas said.
The grant is for an 18-month period.
