Driver Held After High-Speed Chase That Began in Anaheim

LOS ANGELES — An unidentified man was arrested at a Los Angeles hospital Sunday after leading police on a 110 m.p.h. chase that began in Anaheim.

At one point during the pursuit, a Los Angeles police officer who was nearly hit by the fleeing car fired at the driver, but no one was injured, said Sgt. Phillip Lock of the Anaheim Police Department.

The driver, described as in his early 20s, was arrested at the Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center when he got out of his car and ran toward the hospital, Lock said.

The incident began at 3:37 p.m. near the intersection of Pauline and Wilhelmina streets when the man was stopped for a traffic violation by an Anaheim motorcycle officer. A routine check showed that the car, a 1995 Honda Civic, had been reported stolen, Lock said.

While the officer was checking the car, however, the man sped off and got on Interstate 5 toward Los Angeles.

“He was on city streets for awhile and then on a couple of freeways,” Lock said. “He was going everywhere he could to get rid of our unit.”

After traveling at speeds estimated to be 110 m.p.h., the man drove to the hospital, got out of the car and ran to the entrance where he was arrested without incident, Lock said.
