Pittsburgh 5, Tampa Bay 3--The Penguins gave goalie Ken Wregget an early lead with three goals--one apiece by Larry Murphy, Kevin Stevens and Tomas Sandstrom--and he made it stand up at St. Petersburg, Fla.
Jaromir Jagr and Luc Robitaille added goals for Pittsburgh.

Detroit 4, Chicago 1--Steve Yzerman scored and declared himself fully recovered from neck surgery in leading the Red Wings to their first opening-game victory in 13 years at Detroit.
Vyacheslav Kozlov, Paul Coffey and Dino Ciccarelli also scored.

Winnipeg 3, Calgary 3--Keith Tkachuk scored the tying goal with 1:35 left in the third period and the Jets and Flames deadlocked in a fight-filled game at Winnipeg.

Dallas 1, Vancouver 1--Mike Peca’s goal with 3:45 left in the third period lifted the Canucks to a tie with the Stars at Vancouver.
