Los Alamitos regulars Blane Schvaneveldt and John Creager were named champion trainer and jockey, respectively, for 1994 Thursday by the American Quarter Horse Assn. The honor was the 10th consecutive for Schvaneveldt, the only man who has won it since AQHA voting began in 1985.
Schvaneveldt saddled 128 winners last year--15 of them in stakes races--more than any other quarter horse trainer, and horses he trained earned $1,521,413. Two of them, Refrigerator (aged gelding) and Better Than Never (distance), were voted ’94 champions.
Creager rode 534 times and won 90 races in ‘94, his mounts earning $996,122. He was the regular rider of Down With Debt, voted the ’94 world champion, and Ah Sigh, the champion 2-year-old filly.
Down With Debt was also named champion aged horse and champion aged mare.
Other winners: Mr Jess Perry, champion 2-year old and champion 2-year-old colt; Darlin Sixarun, champion 2-year-old gelding; I Hear A Symphony, champion 3-year-old and champion 3-year-old filly; Develop A Plan, champion 3-year-old gelding; Heza Fast Man, champion 3-year-old colt; Make Mine Bud, champion aged stallion; Timeto Takeoff, broodmare of the year; Phillips Ranch, champion breeder; Abigail Kawananakoa, champion owner.
