WESTMINSTER, Md. — A powerful explosion ripped through a house near where a contractor was working Thursday, reducing it to a smoldering pile of steel girders and timbers and damaging up to 50 homes nearby.
The explosion in the vacant home tore out the sides of other houses in the bedroom community about 30 miles northwest of Baltimore, blew out windows and toppled chimneys, state Fire Marshal Bob Thomas said. He said a contractor with a cable television company ruptured a natural gas line.
No serious injuries were reported.
