GTE Gets Video Programming OK in Virginia: The company said it was granted court permission to offer video programming in the state, only the second telephone company to win the right to produce information and entertainment for use on its network. The approval was won in U.S. District Court for the eastern district of Virginia, the state in which Bell Atlantic Corp. on Jan. 12 first won permission to supply video programming. In the court-ordered breakup of the old AT&T; in 1984, telephone companies were prohibited from selling cable television-type services, but recent court actions have overturned those limitations. The latest decision means GTE may offer programming over its own video networks and operate closed cable-TV systems in locations where it also supplies local telephone service.
