Earthquake: The Continuing Recovery : Reply: Complexity Has Caused Delay
- Share via
We understand that the past year has been very difficult for everyone affected by the Northridge earthquake, including Jae and Arthur Weiss, and we pray that no one has to go through this type of disaster again.
Unfortunately, we are precluded from responding to specific statement made to the press by Mr. and Mrs. Weiss, since the company is under a legal obligation to maintain the confidentiality of information contained in its claim files. However, we have worked closely with Mr. and Mrs. Weiss and have already paid substantial sums of money on their claims. We also have provided them with suitable alternative housing so that they can maintain their normal standard of living.
We have handled many claims involving asbestos and paid for the required abatement. We acknowledge that there is a difference of opinion regarding the extent of work required to resolve the problem with the Weiss claim. However, our response to the asbestos problems presented by this claim has been guided by, and is consistent with, the advice of experts in the field.
To date, approximately 94% of the 45,266 claims received by our company as a result of the Northridge earthquake have been concluded, and 20th Century has made payments in excess of $768 million for related losses and expenses.
While the claim process is lengthy with claims of this complexity, we continue to work with our customers in order to bring their claims to a satisfactory conclusion.
