Regarding “God and Country” (Palm Latitudes, Nov. 6): After attending the West Coast premiere of a “Planetary Mass” held in the basement of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, I chuckled as I read about the Rev. Curt Christiansen’s attempts to make religious services “less churchy.” While attendees at the Planetary Mass/rave Mass danced robotics, some while wearing interactive virtual-reality headgear, Christiansen’s congregation was more subdued, merely waltzing. Both “services” seem to have confused service to the body with service to the soul.
On a positive note, the rave Mass, which originated in England, is already passe. Laughing services are now the rage. What’s next?
