GOLF ROUNDUP : Morse Gets Nearer to First Win

From Associated Press

Little-known John Morse, who barely made the PGA Tour’s exempt list in his rookie season last year, shot his second consecutive seven-under-par 65 at Honolulu on Saturday and took a two-stroke lead over Chip Beck after three rounds of the Hawaiian Open.

Morse is at 15-under 201. Beck, who eagled the final hole, shot a 66 to move into second place at 203.

Duffy Waldorf, who was the second-round leader, struggled on the back nine and shot a 71 that left him in third place at 204.

Morse has never led going into the final round and said he was looking forward to the challenge.

“It will be interesting to see how I handle it,” he said, “but I’m pretty confident in my skills and abilities.”

Brett Ogle, who received a bruise below his left eye and a cut on the left arm when hit by a shattered club during the second round of the tournament, said he will play in this week’s tournament at Tucson.

Lee Trevino, recovering from October neck surgery that cut short his 1994 season, shot a 68 to move into a tie with Jim Colbert for the lead of the Senior Tournament of Champions at Dorado, Puerto Rico.

Colbert, who opened with a 72, shot a 66. He and Trevino have two-day totals of six-under 138 on the 6,740-yard Hyatt Dorado Beach East course.

Trevino had five birdies, two on par-fives and the last after he stuck a wedge three feet from the pin at the 10th.
