BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Crescenta Valley Girls Fall Short

The Crescenta Valley High girls’ basketball team mounted a furious comeback attempt, but came up short in a 57-50 loss to host Muir in a Pacific League game Friday night.
Defending league champion Crescenta Valley (15-5, 2-1 in league play) trailed Muir, 35-19, at the half.
However, the Falcons went on a 17-5 run in the third quarter, then pulled to within three points with 30 seconds left before the Mustangs (14-2, 2-0) put it away at the free-throw line.
Michelle Greco scored 16 points and Amirah Leonard added 13 for Crescenta Valley.

Kennedy 64, Chatsworth 63--Tamaya Morris made the first of two free throws with two seconds remaining to give visiting Kennedy (10-5) a victory in a Northwest Valley Conference opener.
Tami Ross had 21 points and 22 rebounds for Kennedy, while Shanna Sasaki paced Chatsworth with 16 points.
Taft 68, Cleveland 38--Nyoki McKeith had 19 points and eight steals and Crystal Griffin added 15 points for Taft (9-1) in a Northwest Valley opener.
Vanessa Dunn and Rachel Martinez contributed 11 and 10 points.
El Camino Real 44, Birmingham 25--Tami Jones scored 26 points for El Camino Real (5-5) in a Northwest Valley opener at home.
The Conquistadores led, 14-13, at halftime before outscoring the Braves, 30-12, in the second half.
North Hollywood 100, Canoga Park 21--Husky reserve Flor Angel made a layup with one second left for the final points in a Valley Pac-8 Conference opener at Canoga Park.
Samantha Fargeon had 24 points and 15 rebounds for North Hollywood (10-2). Anna Celaya added 22 and seven assists.
Monroe 51, Poly 43--Stacy Wong had 13 points for Monroe (7-3, 1-0) in a Valley Pac-8 opener at Poly.
Dora Lopez led all scorers with 15 points for Poly (7-6, 0-1).
Grant 66, Van Nuys 46--Kristen Kiley-Boynton had 18 points and 13 rebounds for Grant in a Valley Pac-8 opener at Van Nuys.
Gohar Tumanian had 16 points and 15 rebounds for Van Nuys (3-7).
Moorpark 64, Santa Clara 36--Sophomore guard Tracey Milburn had 15 points, eight steals and five assists and her sister, junior forward Tina, added 13 points, nine rebounds and five steals as host Moorpark (7-3, 1-1) posted a lopsided Frontier League victory.
Nordhoff 55, Santa Paula 45--Erin Barker scored 25 points for host Nordhoff (9-5, 2-0) in a Frontier League game.
Montclair Prep 46, West Valley Christian 10--Sarah Trankiem scored 10 points for Montclair Prep (4-4) in the Mounties’ first-ever Westside League game.
WOMEN
Cal Lutheran 88, Pomona-Pitzer 82--The Regals used a 17-0 run to open the second half on their way to setting a school record with their 14th consecutive victory.
Kelli McCaskill led Cal Lutheran (12-0, 2-0) with 21 points. Shannon Osborne had 19 of her game-high 24 points in the first half for Pomona-Pitzer (1-3, 1-1).
