NORTH HILLS — A three-vehicle pileup on the San Diego Freeway on Friday night left one person dead and five injured, authorities said.
A car, a pickup truck and a semi-trailer truck collided on the southbound side of the freeway, just south of Devonshire Street, about 5:45 p.m., forcing rescue workers to close all southbound lanes for several minutes, said Brian Humphrey, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department.
Humphrey said it took 20 firefighters about 15 minutes to extricate five of the victims, all of whom came from the same vehicle. Four were in serious or critical condition at local hospitals.
Another, identified only as a man in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene, Humphrey said.
A sixth was hospitalized in unknown condition.
