VENTURA : Celebrations for King Birthday Under Way
- Share via
Celebrations honoring the birthday of the late civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. began Friday evening with a performance by the nationally known group Lula Washington Contemporary Dance Theater at Ventura College.
This weekend, local musicians will recognize the King holiday with a free performance of blues, jazz and gospel music at Ventura Harbor Village from noon to 4 p.m. today, Sunday and Monday.
The celebrations will culminate with a Freedom March on Monday from Oxnard Plaza Park at 5th and C streets to the Oxnard Community Center at 800 Hobson Way.
Before marching to the community center, county officials, spiritual leaders and residents will assemble at the park for prayer at 8:15 a.m.
A program at the center will feature a speech by former Assemblywoman Gwen Moore, Scripture readings and gospel music.
A benefit gospel brunch, planned for the Ventura Theater Sunday in honor of King’s birthday and as a tribute to the late Chancellor Thomas G. Lakin, has been postponed because of weather conditions.
The brunch, which will feature Southern-style foods and gospel music, is now scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 5.
Tickets for the brunch are $25, and the proceeds will go to a scholarship fund for Lakin’s four daughters. For ticket information, call 648-1888.
For more information on King’s birthday celebrations, call 486-2424.
