16 Shot Dead in Attacks on Algerian Bus, Mosque

ALGIERS — Gunmen shot and killed 16 people in attacks on a bus and a mosque, security forces reported Wednesday. Muslim extremists were suspected.
Wednesday was the third anniversary of the coup that put an army-backed government in power after Islamic fundamentalists were poised to win an election.
The attacks took place Tuesday. The same day, troops shot dead six armed militants in the south.
