Former Principal in Alabama Settles Dispute Over Racism

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — A former Alabama high school principal who tried to discourage interracial dating at the school’s prom last year avoided a lengthy civil rights court battle Monday by making a deal with the federal government.
The U.S. Justice Department announced a last-minute settlement with the Randolph County Board of Education allowing Hulond Humphries to maintain his current duties as a school administrator.
But Humphries, who until August had been principal of Randolph County High School in Wedowee for 27 years, is barred from visiting school campuses during regular hours until July, 1997.
Humphries threatened last February to cancel the senior prom if mixed-race couples planned to attend.
Revonda Bowen, then a junior, also accused him of calling her “a mistake” because she has a white father and black mother. Humphries denied the allegation.
