Shamon Antrum has a simple explanation for scoring 19 points in leading Washington State to its second consecutive upset of a ranked team.
“I think my teammates were just finding the open man and I was just filling it,” Antrum said after the Cougars handed No. 23 Stanford its first loss, 77-63, Saturday in Pullman, Wash. “I was open and the ball was just going in.”
The Cougars, who beat No. 17 California, 83-71, on Thursday, are 6-3 overall and 2-0 in the Pacific 10.
“These were big (victories), but I just always want to win the next game,” first-year Cougar Coach Kevin Eastman said. “It was an opportunity.”
Stanford (10-1, 1-1) had been off to its best start in 41 years.
The Cougars led, 42-35, at halftime and went on a 15-5 run to start the second half, with forwards Carlos Daniel and Mark Hendrickson each scoring four points. Stanford got no closer than 14 after that.
No. 9 Arizona 82, Rhode Island 67--Damon Stoudamire scored 20 points and Ray Owes had 18, leading the Wildcats (10-3) past the Rams (4-6) in Providence, R.I.
Arizona led by 11 points at halftime, but Rhode Island moved within 46-41 with 11:33 to go. Corey Williams then made a three-point basket to start a 14-4 run and Stoudamire made a three-point goal that ended it, putting the Wildcats ahead 60-45. They never were threatened again.
Cuttino Mobley and Tyson Wheeler finished with 17 points each for Rhode Island.
No. 15 Arizona State 71, Old Dominion 52--Mario Bennett had 16 points and career-highs with seven assists and seven blocked shots to lead the Sun Devils (11-2) at Tempe, Ariz.
Bennett had 10 points and four assists in the first half when Arizona State had runs of 16-0, 12-0 and 8-0 to send Old Dominion (5-8) to its fifth consecutive loss.
Arizona State (11-2) has won six consecutive games, tied for the longest streak in Coach Bill Frieder’s six seasons. The Sun Devils have not been 11-2 since 1980-81, when they started 19-2.
No. 17 California 84, Washington 76--Monty Buckley scored 26 points, including 12 on free throws, as the Golden Bears (8-2, 1-1) ended a two-game losing streak in beating the Huskies (4-6, 0-2) at Seattle.
Bryant Boston’s lay-in with 16 seconds remaining brought Washington within six points, but the Huskies, losing their third consecutive game, could get no closer.
