If it were a dunk contest, Verbum Dei won both in number and creativity.
Dominguez, however, dominated virtually every other aspect of the nonleague game to beat the Eagles, 96-72, on Wednesday at Dominguez.
Fifty-six fouls were called in the game, 35 against Verbum Dei.
Dominguez forward Tommy Prince, one of the state’s top recruits, had a game-high 29 points, including a dunk following an alley-oop pass. Prince has narrowed his choice of schools to Maryland, UCLA and Nevada Las Vegas.
The most impressive dunk came when Verbum Dei’s Jamal Johnson took three steps down the left half of the baseline and made a right-handed dunk over three Dominguez players.
Andre Larry had 16 points for the Eagles.
“They got a lot of second and third shots,” Verbum Dei Coach Mike Kearney said. “They were very strong and we don’t box out very well.”
Records: Verbum Dei 8-4; Dominguez 14-1
