EASTSIDE : Winners Announced in Levi’s Art Contest

Three Eastside high school students and one from Bell won scholarships and awards in the annual Arte Latino de Levi’s competition to promote the Levi Strauss & Co.
Separate competitions were held in Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco and San Antonio. The students were nominated for the competition by their schools and arts and community organizations.
The grand prize winner in Los Angeles was Felipe Zamorano of Bell, whose work can be seen on a billboard at 11th and Main streets. Zamorano, 17, received a $2,000 arts scholarship from Levi’s.
Ulysses Garcia, a senior at Salesian High School, won first prize with his painting of a couple in an embrace doing the quebradita in front of a Levi’s banner and a stars and stripes background. Garcia, 17, received a $1,000 art scholarship.
Second prize went to Miguel Felipe, who received a $750 art scholarship. Felipe, 18, who attends the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, drew a portrait of a person in Levi’s with a handkerchief showing flags from different countries flowing out of the back pocket.
Miguel Diaz, a 17-year-old senior at Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, won third place for his abstract entry. He received a $500 art scholarship.
