GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : St. Margaret’s Defeats Liberty Christian

Stephanie Canright scored 21 points to help St. Margaret’s to a 67-62 Academy League victory over Liberty Christian Friday night in San Juan Capistrano.

Jean Freeman added 20 points and 19 rebounds for St. Margaret’s (4-5, 1-0). The Tartans outscored Liberty Christian, 34-15, in the first half and 27-12 from the free-throw line. Liberty Christian is 5-5, 0-1 in league.

Santiago 38, Bolsa Grande 21--Angie Ching-Sam scored 14 points for host Santiago (6-8, 1-0).

Rancho Alamitos 58, La Quinta 44--Nuyet Nguyen had 14 points and Sonia Ramirez had 11 for Rancho Alamitos (3-8, 1-1), which led, 18-10, after the first quarter. Tina Shum had 16 points for La Quinta (0-13, 0-2).

Newport Harbor 58, Irvine 30--Dianne Pulido scored 15 points and had 10 rebounds, and Mandy Clayton added 12 points for visiting Newport Harbor (11-1, 1-0).

Corona del Mar 42, El Toro 40--Jennifer Gardner scored 14 points and Melissa Ford added 11 to lead Corona del Mar (8-8, 1-0), which outscored the Chargers, 17-15, in the second half. Janell Jewett scored 14 points to lead El Toro (5-9, 0-1).

Woodbridge 94, Santa Margarita 24--Melanie Pearson scored 21 points, including three three-pointers, for Woodbridge (14-1, 1-0). Teammate Erin Stovall added 17 points and seven steals.
