SANTA ANA — Justin Kerr scored in the 21st minute, Jeremy Ellis added a goal in the 31st minute and Newport Harbor shut out Mater Dei, 2-0, in a nonleague boys’ soccer game Monday at Mater Dei.
Goalkeeper Steve Kleha made the two goals stand up, recording seven saves for the Sailors.
Mater Dei (8-3-1), unranked last week, is ranked fourth this week; Newport Harbor (12-3) remains 10th.
Kleha got plenty of defensive help from junior fullback Ryan Hoover.
“I thought we played our best game as a team and Ryan Hoover played an outstanding game in his first start as sweeper,” Newport Harbor Coach Colin Bouette said.
