The 61st Sugar Bowl marked the end of a long association with the Southeastern Conference as it joins the bowl alliance with the Orange and Fiesta bowls. Only four Sugar Bowls have not involved members or former members of the SEC.
Next year, the Orange is first up in a three-game rotation to decide a national champion. The Sugar Bowl will be played on New Year’s Eve to not coincide with the Orange. New Orleans gets the national championship game--if one exists--in 1997.
