Public Works Crews Chip In for Homeless

Who: The city’s public works employees

Contribution: At their annual holiday luncheon recently, the employees raised money and collected food to feed more than 100 homeless people. City vehicle yard workers started the tradition six years ago. The food and money was earmarked for donation to the Shelter for the Homeless. “We just wanted to help out some of the people that can’t help themselves during the Christmas season,” said Frank Morgan, vehicle maintenance worker.

Council Honors Grocery’s Donations

Who: Ralphs grocery store, 17801 Santiago Blvd.

Contribution: The Villa Park City Council has honored the store for its “outstanding contributions to civic, charitable and community organizations.” Mayor Bob Patchin said the store, which is a prime tax source for this community of 6,400 residents, is also a major donor to many causes. Jim Lee, representing Ralphs Grocery Co., and Ken Admire, representing the Villa Park store, accepted the award.

Conservation Corps Seeks Diverse Helpers

The Orange County Conservation Corps needs volunteers to be education assistants, mentors, office assistants, photographers, videographers, fund-raisers and other helpers. Established in 1993 by the city of Anaheim’s Gang and Drug Task Force, the Conservation Corps assists young adults, age 18 to 23. The corps helps them earn high school diplomas while learning job skills. Information: (714) 776-2677.

City Seeks to Fill Arts Board Vacancy

City officials are seeking to fill a vacancy on the nine-member Huntington Beach Allied Arts Board, which is responsible for coordinating programs related to the arts. The board meets the first Tuesday of each month at the Civic Center and advises the City Council on matters relating to cultural activities. Information: Cultural Services at (714) 536-5258.

IRVINE

Boys, Young Moms Need Role Models

Big Brothers of Orange County has 18 boys in the Irvine area in need of “big brothers.” Volunteers must spend three to six hours a week with a child. The adult volunteers must also have been residents of Orange County for a minimum of six months and must complete an application process. Volunteers are also needed for the organization’s Teen Mother program. Information: (714) 544-7773.
