Little Tokyo’s New Otani Hotel & Garden welcomes the new year with a daylong cultural celebration kicking off at 11 a.m. today.
Most of the festivities, honoring Japan’s most celebrated holiday, are free and all are open to the public. Set in the hotel’s half-acre authentic Japanese rooftop garden, the activities will begin with the introduction of the Nisei queen.
A taiko -drum show by the Zenshuji Zendeko children’s drummers will be followed by Kagami-Wari , the traditional sake -barrel breaking ceremony.
Guests and hotel staff will then participate in mochi (rice) pounding. Samples of sake and rice will be offered.
Exhibitions, including an art show, a martial-arts demonstration, Japanese dancing and karaoke, will be held throughout the hotel until 3 p.m.
The New Otani Hotel & Garden is located at 120 S. Los Angeles Street. For additional information, contact the hotel concierge at (213) 629-1200, Ext. 53.
