For dedicated gardeners, here are suggestions from the California Assn. of Nurserymen on what to do in the garden this week:

* Get rhododendrons and azaleas ready for winter by mulching heavily around their base. Two to three inches of organic compost should do it.

* If you haven’t done so, install a drip irrigation system this autumn to give you better water management for spring and summer heat.

* Take care of roses this month. Remove dead wood, twiggy growth, damaged leaves or stems. These should all be bagged and taken to the dump.

* Replant your containers with winter blooming annuals and perennials. Your garden can be bright even on gloomy days.

* Remove tulips from the refrigerator and prepare bulb beds for planting. Use bone meal or a bulb fertilizer when planting them.
