Japanese Doctor Was Gunned Down by Disgruntled Patient

TOKYO — A man who shot a doctor to death at a crowded Tokyo railway station was a patient dissatisfied with a hernia operation, police said Wednesday.
The 36-year-old man fired a Russian Tokarev pistol into Dr. Takejiro Okazaki’s back in front of hundreds of morning rush-hour commuters Tuesday in a crime that shocked the nation.
The man, who had also been treated for mental illness, was still at large, police said.
Authorities here are worried by a recent influx of smuggled guns, including American Colts and Smith & Wessons, Chinese-made Russian Tokarevs and handcrafted replicas of U.S. models made in the Philippines.
Handguns are banned for civilians in Japan.
