High school students interested in immigration and current affairs in California are invited to participate in an essay contest about Proposition 187.
The Orange County chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union is sponsoring a contest called “Immigrants, California and Proposition 187: An Essay.”
Proposition 187, which will appear on the November ballot, is the so-called “Save Our State” initiative, which would restrict government benefits to undocumented immigrants. Contest judges will be looking for entries that thoughtfully analyze the impact of Proposition 187 on the state, said Sam Mistrano, ACLU legislative director in Los Angeles.
Essays should be two to four pages long. The winner will be awarded $100, and the winning essay will be published in the ACLU’s “Open Forum” newsletter.
Entries should be submitted to: ACLU Immigrant Issues Essay Contest, 14252 Culver, Suite A--570, Irvine CA 92714-1918. All entries must be postmarked by Nov. 20.
Information: (213) 977-9500, Ext. 261.
