Police Car Donated to College Academy

Who: Buena Park Police Department

Contribution: Donated a 1990 Chevrolet Caprice police car to the Fullerton College Police Academy. The college, which regularly supplies new recruits to the department, needed five patrol cars for its training program. Police officials said the car had served the city but was no longer needed by the department. The car’s light bar is now considered out of date, they said. The cruiser would have fetched about $3,000 at an auction, they added. Academy students plan fund-raisers to help pay for new tires and upholstery.

6th Graders Give DARE a Big Boost

Who: 1993-94 sixth-grade class, Los Coyotes Elementary School

Contribution: Raised $500 for the La Palma DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program. Class members sold cakes and cookies, sweated through a jog-a-thon and hawked T-shirts and sweat shirts to raise the money. The kids, who began middle school this year, presented the check to the City Council in September. DARE is a popular anti-drug program that is employed at schools throughout the county.

PacifiCare Gives $50,000 to Red Cross

Who: PacifiCare Health Systems

Contribution: Donated $50,000 to the Orange County chapter of the American Red Cross. The donation will help the Red Cross provide disaster emergency services. Such services were used during last year’s Laguna Beach firestorm. Money will also go to HIV/AIDS education, health training, and services for military families. As a “partner in community preparedness,” PacifiCare gave more than $75,000 to the Red Cross last year and sponsored this year’s Clara Barton Spectrum Awards. The Red Cross provides temporary shelter and food to victims of natural disasters including floods and earthquakes. The group sponsors disaster-preparedness classes. Red Cross volunteers are on-hand at most major fires to provide relief and comfort to victims.

Delta Donates $10,000 for Abused Children

Who: Delta Airlines

Contribution: Donated $10,000 to Olive Crest’s Treatment Centers for Abused Children. Delta is one of several corporations that help Olive Crest care for abused, neglected and abandoned children. Olive Crest, which operates 23 group homes, began an adopt-a-home sponsorship program in June. Officials hope the program will raise more than $500,000.
