PREP ROUNDUP : Marina Girls Move Into Third-Place Tie in League Volleyball

Marina, led by Marcy Crouch’s 27 kills, moved into a third-place tie with Esperanza in Sunset League girls’ volleyball by beating Fountain Valley, 10-15, 17-15, 15-6, 15-12, Tuesday at Fountain Valley.

Marina (8-7, 3-4) took an 11-4 lead in Game 4 but had to hold off Fountain Valley. The Barons scored eight of the next nine points to tie the score, 12-12, but Jessica Lyon served an ace and Crouch had two kills to end the match.

“The last game we got up a little bit and started pressing ourselves,” Marina Coach Jason Bilbruck said. “In the timeout, I told Marcy, ‘You’re the one we need to win this one.’ ”

Fountain Valley (4-6, 2-5) was led by Kristin Moro, who had 20 kills, including six in the first game, when Marina made several unforced errors.

But the Vikings’ play improved in the second game, which had four lead changes. At 15-15, a double-hit was called on Fountain Valley, and on the next point, Moro’s kill attempt was wide, giving Marina the game.
