Hotels Try Discounts: Major local hotels are discounting rooms to leisure travelers for fall, but using different gimmicks to do it.

Marriott is offering weekend packages through Dec. 31 as low as $69 a night, including breakfast for two, at 14 Southland hotels including six in Orange County.

Guests who charge their stay with a Visa card can earn credits that entitle them to $20 off on a two-night stay, or $40 on a three-night stay. Or the credits can be banked for use at other vacation destinations, from Holland America cruises to American Airlines vacation packages.

The Anaheim Hilton, by contrast, is offering its own weekend deal at $89 a night, which also includes breakfast for two. The hook: romance.

“Hilton’s national Romance Survey results show that couples believe going away together for a weekend is one of the best ways to keep romance alive,” said Glenn Hale, general manager. And he couldn’t help but plug the place across the street.

“Disneyland is especially nice this time of year because the park has a less crowded, leisurely feel about it,” he said.
