Earnings: Capital Cities/ABC Inc. said its third-quarter profit jumped 71% due to strong advertising business at its broadcasting and publishing units, with revenue rising 12%. The owner of the ABC network said it earned $133.7 million in the three months ended Oct. 2, compared to $78.3 million a year earlier, and that revenue climbed to $1.46 billion. Income from operations jumped 64% to $243 million, due in part to rising ratings and advertiser demand at ABC. The company’s eight TV stations showed substantial increases in operating profit, due to rising ad demand and cost-control efforts. Capital Cities also reported improved results from the ESPN cable sports channel and publishing operations. For the first nine months of the year, the company earned $439.2 million, compared to $288.5 million a year earlier.
