Mobil May Cut 15,000 Support Jobs Mobil Corp. announced plans to eliminate up to that many staff positions worldwide in an effort to eliminate “hundreds of millions of dollars” in overhead costs. Mobil currently employs 60,000. The cuts could involve as much as 40% of the support staff at Mobil headquarters in Fairfax, Va. Support staff jobs range from clerical workers and computer programmers to lawyers and accountants. In many cases, the cuts will involve consolidating overlapping functions or eliminating operations by contracting out the work. Staff support services currently account for 25% of Mobil’s controllable cash expenses. In recent years, Mobil has eliminated 17,000 jobs worldwide at an estimated annual savings of $700 million.
