COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Titans Rally to Beat UCI in Overtime

Cal State Fullerton scored two goals in the final six minutes of overtime for a 4-3 victory over host UC Irvine on Sunday in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation soccer.
After UC Irvine’s Adel Afkarian put the Anteaters (11-5, 4-3) up, 3-2, four minutes into the first overtime period, the Titans (9-6-1, 4-3) responded.
Senior Eddie Soto scored his third goal of the game, on an assist from Ricky Rodriguez nine minutes into the second overtime.
The winning goal came two minutes later when senior Brad Wilson beat goalie Matt Goldman amid a pack of Irvine defenders in front of the net.
“It was a tremendous victory for these guys the way they came back,” Cal State Fullerton Coach Al Mistri said. “It wasn’t really artistic. We didn’t really get on track.”
The Titans, who trailed twice in the game, fell behind, 1-0, when senior P.J. Polowski beat goalie Mike Kornock 19 minutes into the opening half.
Soto pulled the Titans even with his first goal on a penalty kick three minutes later.
Soto’s second goal, assisted by Matt Bradbury, put the Titans ahead at the 57 minute mark, but Irvine tied the score ten minutes later.
Polowski scored his second goal of the game on a penalty kick, tying him with Kevin Smith for the UC Irvine career point record at 70. He has scored 18 goals this season.
Soto’s three goals give him 11 this season, one short of his career high. Kornock recorded eight saves and Goldman had five for the Anteaters.
In nonconference women’s soccer:
UC Irvine 2, UC Santa Barbara 2 (OT)--UC Irvine’s Tracie Ann Manz scored with about eight minutes left in regulation to tie it, 2-2. It was the team-high eighth goal from Manz, a freshman from Estancia High. Jenni Tanaka had the assist on the tying goal.
Claudia Ruggiero scored UC Irvine’s other goal.
