KANSAS CITY — His coach says he’s like a fine wine and his linemen say he’s a delight to block for.
His 34-year-old legs, churning like a teen-ager on a long touchdown run in Kansas City’s 38-23 victory over Seattle, say Marcus Allen’s career is far from done.
“I can still run a little bit, guys,” a grinning Allen told reporters bunched six-deep around his stall. “I just saw an opportunity.”
Late in the third quarter, with the Chiefs protecting a 13-7 lead, Allen burst through a hole on the left side of the line, cut sharply right and sped 36 yards for his 117th career touchdown. He passed John Riggins for fourth on the career list with his longest scoring run since going 61 yards against Denver in 1985.
“That’s an old dive play from our days as a power-running offense,” said guard Dave Szott, who helped open the hole. “It’s supposed to get five yards max. But Marcus made the perfect cut. Guys like him and Joe (Montana) are fun to block for because you know they can make something happen on any play.”
Touchdown No. 117 put the Chiefs on top, 19-7. Then, as if to prove once more how wrong people were three years ago to declare him washed up, Allen took Montana’s handoff and ran for the two-point conversion.
“I was still thinking about that dropped pass I had earlier before the half,” Allen said. “It was a great big hole and I just hit it. There wasn’t much else to do.”
Coach Marty Schottenheimer said, “I think that Marcus is like a fine wine. He keeps getting better each week.”
Montana threw two touchdown passes as the Chiefs won their seventh consecutive game against the Seahawks and made the Seahawks 0-6 in post-bye games.
The Chiefs (5-2) had only six days to get ready after playing on Monday night, while the Seahawks (3-4) had two weeks.
Montana completed 21 of 31 passes for 270 yards and two touchdowns. He completed a nine-yard touchdown pass to Kimble Anders in the second quarter and tossed a 21-yarder to Lake Dawson in the fourth for the rookie’s first NFL touchdown. Dawson had five catches for 93 yards.
