Newport Beach
City Council meeting
When: Monday, 2 and 7 p.m.
Where: City Council chambers, 3300 Newport Blvd.
What: The council will discuss a plan to outlaw gasoline-powered leaf blowers as part of the city’s first noise ordinance. Electric or battery-powered blowers would be allowed as long as they meet the new noise standards. Other matters scheduled for consideration include hearings on a new law governing the collection and loading of recyclable materials and a proposed ordinance that would restrict the size of balconies along Ocean Front. The council will also take a final vote on new fees and regulations involving police response to private alarms.

Newport Beach/
Costa Mesa
Newport-Mesa Unified School District meeting
When: Tuesday, 7 p.m.
Where: Harper Community Center, 425 E. 18th St.
What: The board will vote on a plan to use drug-sniffing police dogs to search lockers and other areas. The board initially hoped to bring the dogs to campuses this semester. But now, officials say, the search won’t begin until the spring semester. The searches would affect students in grades 7-12.

Fullerton
City Council meeting
When: Tuesday, 7:30 p.m.
Where: City Hall, 303 W. Commonwealth Ave.
What: Three council members ousted by voters in a June recall election will step down. Three new members elected last week will be inaugurated. The new council will select a mayor and mayor pro tem. The new council members are attorney Jan M. Flory, 50; businessman Conrad DeWitte, 46, and attorney Peter Godfrey, 49.

Irvine
City Council meeting
When: Tuesday, 5:30 p.m.
Where: Council
chambers, 1 Civic
Center Plaza.
What: The council will look at the future of local riding and hiking trails. Council members are concerned that Westpark residents could end up paying fees to complete trails that are used by residents throughout the county. “The people of Westpark shouldn’t bear that burden,” Councilman Greg Smith said.
