“Life--and Death--in Fast Lane at Ascot” (Oct. 10) brought back memories. I served on the Battleship Texas and later on the Cruiser Pensacola during the years from 1927 to 1934. We were based at San Pedro.
In one race Wilbur Shaw was bumped from behind and for some strange reason he went about 10 feet straight up in the air and landed on his feet running, safely off the track! Ernie Triplett and two other drivers were killed in a road race in one of the worst days of California racing.
“Wild Bill” Cummings was one of the crowd’s favorite drivers during those years.
Later, “Wild Bill” was driving home from his Chevrolet office in Detroit when he ran into a bridge abutment and was killed in a single-car accident.
