Tanker Sinks Off Hong Kong; Russian Cargo Ship Sinks

HONG KONG — A Maltese oil tanker broke apart and sank Saturday in the typhoon-churned South China Sea, leaving 17 people dead or missing, the government said.
A government spokeswoman said 19 other crew members aboard the 19,855-ton vessel were rescued when it sank 372 miles southeast of Hong Kong.
The tanker was sailing from Russia to Singapore loaded with fuel oil when it capsized in seas whipped up by the approach of Typhoon Teresa, government-owned Radio Hong Kong said.
Another ship, a Russian cargo vessel, also sank Saturday during a storm off Turkey’s northern Black Sea coast. One sailor died and 10 were missing, while 15 others reportedly reached shore in a lifeboat.
The cargo vessel was carrying steel to France from Turkey. Its crew was Russian.
