BUENA PARK — Greg Garand hit Jeff Renaud with a 12-yard touchdown pass with 43 seconds left to give Sunny Hills a 13-12 Freeway League victory over Fullerton Friday night at Buena Park High.
The Lancers had driven from their 15-yard line to the Indian five in the final two minutes, but Garand was sacked twice for a loss of seven yards. On fourth-and-goal from the 12, Garand then found Renaud open in the right side of the end zone for the go-ahead score. A two-point conversion attempt failed.
The game-winner was the second touchdown pass to Renaud from Garand, who completed 17 of 34 passes for 219 yards.
Fullerton had scored first after a short punt from the end zone by Sunny Hills (2-5, 1-1) gave the Indians the ball on the Lancer 27-yard line. Running back John Wilkie’s one-yard touchdown run gave Fullerton a 6-0 lead.
The Lancers took a 7-6 lead when Renaud caught a 30-yard pass from Garand on fourth down with 6 minutes 32 seconds left the first half.
Fullerton (4-3, 1-1) had three scoring chances in the third quarter. After a fumble by Chris Velotta, the Indians’ Ryan Gregory missed a 37-yard field-goal attempt.
A two-yard punt by the Lancers gave Fullerton similar field position, but again Gregory missed a field-goal attempt, this time from 35 yards.
Fullerton took a 12-7 lead after another Velotta fumble set up a short drive that was capped by a one-yard touchdown run by Christopher Young with 3:28 left in the third quarter.
