PREP EXTRA: SATURDAY FOOTBALL PULLOUT : GARDEN GROVE LEAGUE : Santiago’s Palacios Helps Spoil Homecoming for La Quinta

Jose Palacios rushed for 121 yards and scored two touchdowns as Santiago spoiled La Quinta’s homecoming by winning Friday night’s Garden Grove League game, 26-2.

Palacios ran the final 20 yards of the opening drive for the Cavaliers (3-4, 2-1), and added a one-yard plunge midway through the second quarter.

The Cavaliers added two quick touchdowns midway through the third quarter to put the game away. Following an Octavio Villa interception, Anthony Callari capped a three-play, 32-yard drive with an 18-yard scoring run with 5 minutes 52 seconds left in the period.

Matt Eckert then recovered a fumble on the Aztec five on the next play from scrimmage, and Tom Sokanthong carried it in from there on the following play with 4:59 remaining in the period.

The Aztecs (1-6, 0-4) avoided the shutout on the first play of the fourth quarter when Sokanthong dropped back to punt, and chased a wild snap out of the end zone for a safety.

Cavaliers quarterback Christian Cortez completed two of 10 passes for 38 yards, but rushed for 36 yards had a key interception early in the game. Callari finished with 50 yards in six carries.
