HOW LONG IS LONG?

How long is Ocean View’s 36-game losing streak? Long enough that there is no heir apparent. Los Angeles Jordan had the second-longest streak in the state until last week, dropping 31 in a row before its 9-8 victory over Huntington Park last Friday. Who is next on the list? Maricopa? Biggs? California School for the Deaf/Riverside? Nobody is quite sure.

Nelson Tennis of Cal-Hi Sports has traditionally kept a list of the six or eight longest winning and losing streaks, which he updates at the end of each season.

However, two factors have kept that list from being useful: Every school except Ocean View on the top-six list, the aforementioned teams included, has snapped its streak by winning this year. Also, the state library in Sacramento, the source of much of Tennis’ comprehensive research, has been closed for remodeling.

CLASH OF THE TITANS

Friday’s game between Mater Dei and San Clemente featured two of the county’s top linemen in Matt Motherway and Brett Samperi; however, the much-anticipated clash between Motherway, who goes both ways for the Monarchs, and Samperi, who plays only on offense, never really materialized.

“We went against each other just one time,” Samperi said, “but we ran a draw-trap and I didn’t get to hit him.”

ON THE RECORD

LOOKING AHEAD

A couple of long streaks will be on the line next week.

Los Alamitos, which has not lost in its past 42 games--although Edison led the Griffins, 12-7, with only 38 seconds left to play Thursday night--puts its No. 1 ranking on the line Thursday at Long Beach Veterans Stadium, where it plays host to No. 3 Esperanza.

The Aztecs, who have two losses this season (to powerhouses Mater Dei and Long Beach Poly), are a well-rounded team that should pose a formidable foe.

On the other end of the spectrum, Ocean View, which has the state’s longest losing streak (36 games), plays host Friday to Santa Ana at Huntington Beach High.

The Saints are winless but have a chance to be a winner when they play host to Tustin (0-6) at Santa Ana Stadium at 7 tonight.

FLAGS WILL FLY

It pays to keep your hands to yourself.

After Mission Viejo’s Michael Smith returned a kickoff 34 yards, he was run out of bounds on his own sideline, then was hit late by a Capistrano Valley tackler. Two of Smith’s teammates came to his defense and pushed the offender. Flags flew. The Diablos got the ball advanced 15 yards from the end of Smith’s run, but then had two personal foul penalties marched off against them.

Result? First and 40 from the Diablo 25.

ARTISTS’ REUNION

Laguna Beach celebrated its 60th year of football Friday night, bringing back from its 1934 team, nine players: Lucian Means, Evert Biggs, Ken Nasler, Lou Carscaden, Herman Walker, Art Sherman, Quinton Wirtz, Rollo Becke and Doc Blacketer.
